Microsoft has been criticized for the continuing segmentation of Windows with a variety of editions of the same operating system. Windows 7 is available in versions Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. Now reveal the software giant to upcoming Windows 8 stops at three versions: two for the Intel x86 and one for ARM-based computer, including tablets.
Windows 8 for x86 and ARM
Windows 8 in the standard edition is intended for consumers and is likely to come with most pre-built computers designed for ordinary users. Here is everything from the traditional desktop to the bundled software such as Internet Explorer 10, Remote Desktop (client only) and Windows Media Player, but not more pro-oriented features such as support for domains, built-in encryption and virtualization.
Windows 8 Pro will replace the current Professional and Ultimate for power users and businesses. Like the standard edition, it is about an operating system for x86-based personal computers, but this shows the complete set of features.
Windows RT is what is also known as Windows on ARM, or simply Windows 8 for ARM processors in general and tablets in particular. The abbreviation RT stands for runtime, the new programming model for the touch-screen customized interface Metro. Most features of the Standard Edition is included, with the important addition that Microsoft also ships with Office suite.
Finally, it is noted that Microsoft restricts upgrade options. Those who currently use Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate can only transfer the system to Windows 8 Pro, but not the standard edition. In the latter case, a clean installation.
